Conversations

The interesting answer comes one question later.

For more than a decade, I've interviewed entrepreneurs, executives, investors, academics, artists and changemakers across four continents.

I do the homework, listen closely and follow what is interesting. The goal is simple: get past the polished answer and leave the audience understanding something they didn't before.

Philosophy

I prepare hard enough that I don't have to sound prepared.

I want to understand the person, their work and the room before I walk on stage. Preparation gets the obvious questions out of the way. Once we start, I listen.

A detail in an answer, an unexpected choice of words or something left unsaid usually tells me where to go next. That's often where the most useful part begins.

Do the homework.

Know enough about the person and the subject to skip the questions anyone could ask.

Listen.

The next question should come from the answer in front of you, not the list in your hand.

Get somewhere.

The audience should leave knowing, seeing or thinking about something differently.
